The Malana hydropower plant utilises the water from the Malana river and helps to meet the power shortages in the Northern region. In the months from November to May, the plant operates at peak capacity. During the rest of the year, it is operated as a base load plant.

Water is collected at the plant's intake and then transferred via an underground headrace tunnel and steel surface penstock into the powerhouse at Chauki village. Power is transmitted to the Himachal Pradesh State's Bajaura connection point via a high voltage transmission line built by the plant.

The hydropower plant was constructed and commissioned ahead of schedule, resulting in lower project costs. Out of eight projects allocated by the government of Himachal Pradesh, Malana is the only project to be completed ahead of time.
